KUALA LUMPUR: About 5,000 Malaysians will be given a second chance to further their studies at Segi University College with an education subsidy offer of up to RM15,000.

Puteri Umno Chief Datuk Rosnah Abdul Rashid Shirlin said a cooperation arrangement between the movement and college makes it possible for poor students to improve themselves through education, with the first batch of 5,000 students to begin their studies on Dec 15 at the Seri Kembangan campus in Serdang.

“We target rural students who cannot afford to study or those who are behind in their studies, regardless of their background in line with the 1Malaysia concept,” she told reporters after signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the cooperation programme with Segi University College, here yesterday.

Also present at the event was Segi University college Vice-Chancellor Prof Emeritus Dr Muhamad Awang, Segi College Seri Kembangan principal Annuar Zamzury Jolis and Puteri Umno Education Bureau chairman Seriwani Sabtu.

Rosnah said the “Kecemerlangan Milikmu Tiada Alasan Lagi!” (No Excuse For Excellence Not To Be Yours) programme ensured that students need not make any payment upon registration.

“This subsidy covers registration, accomodation and transportation for a three-year programme. There is no reason for them not to study,” she said, adding that students were also eligible to apply for loans from the National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN).

She said the programme offered 12 diploma courses and 17 skills certificates training to Malaysians aged between 18 and 45 with a minimum SPM qualification.

Among the diploma programmes offered are culinary arts, information technology, accounting and automotive technology while certificates include computer systems, graphic design, pastry making, hairdressing, beautician and multimedia design (animation and visual). — Bernama
