KOTA KINABALU: A security guard’s quick action saved a couple of families from a fire which destroyed an office on the third floor of Block E, Lot 6, Sinsuran Complex here yesterday.

“I was making my normal round when I saw smoke billowing out from the building around 5pm. I immediately ran up and knocked on the door but there was no answer, so I went to the next block and alerted the families,” said Madzan Mohd, 55, when met at the scene yesterday.

Madzan said the door to the office was padlocked which made it difficult for the fire and rescue personnel to enter.

Lim, 59, who has been renting the premises for about three years, said he was out from the office for a couple of hours and when he returned found his office was on fire.

Meanwhile, Sembulan station fire chief Ariffin Harris, who was at the scene, said a distress call was received at 5.20pm and five fire engines from Sembulan, Penampang and Lintas with 28 personnel were dispatched to the scene within minutes.

“We managed to put the fire under control within half an hour,” he said, adding that no casualty was reported while the cause of the fire and the total loss were still under investigation.

This was the second fire affecting Block E at Sinsuran Complex. On June 8 this year, two shop lots and a rented room were destroyed by fire.

No casualty was reported but the incident caused many tenants to lose their valuables.
