KUALA LUMPUR: The police (PDRM) has its own mechanism to check corruption among personnel, said Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Tan Sri Ismail Omar.

“We are always monitoring our personnel to check corrupt practices,” he said when commenting on the Global Corruption Barometre (GCB) 2010 which perceived PDRM as most corrupt followed by political parties and parliament.

Ismail said all quarters should provide PDRM with information adding personnel should inculcate integrity to make fighting corruption more effective.

However, the IGP did not reveal the number of personnel involved with corruption and those disciplined.

GCB conducted by Transparency International involved face-to-face survey of 1,000 respondents in urban and rural areas.

Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) investigation director Mustafar Ali said it received lots of information on the misconduct of police and customs personnel.

He said large institutions or departments charged with providing services enforcing the law were easily exposed to corruption and public dissatisfaction.

GCB also showed that public confidence was low as no ‘big fish’ or high ranking officers were arrested. — Bernama
