KUALA LUMPUR: Local toy makers have met Malaysian standards to ensure that their products are safe for children, according to an official of the Science, Technology and  Innovation Ministry.

Principal assistant director of the Standards Division Ahmad Razif Abd Rahim said the manufacturers had to adhere to several regulations.

These include the MS 1774 which covers chemical toys, the MS 1725 for electrical toys, and MS ISO 8124 that is concerned with  mechanical and physical properties.

The enforcement of some of the MS regulations had been handed to the Domestic Trade, Cooperative and Consumerism Ministry Ahmad Razif told Bernama.

He hoped the new government regulation allowing toy manufacturers to make a declaration about their products will not be abused.

“The self declaration approach is still new in Malaysia. It is quick and convenient,” Ahmad Razif said.

“But we have to increase the penalty if the manufacturers are found to have made a fraudulent declaration.”

He said that an offender may be fined up to RM250,000 and jailed. — Bernama
