Candidates must subscribe to BN ideology — Dr Chan

MIRI: SUPP president Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr George Chan insisted that the party’s candidates for the coming state election must subscribe to Barisan Nasional’s (BN) ideology.

“Like what had been said by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, potential election candidates must be from BN component parties and it is the main criteria,” he stated in a press conference after presenting Minor Rural Project (MRP) grants totaling RM108,000 to 18 local recipients at the party’s Miri headquarters yesterday.

Apart from subscribing to BN’s ideology, Dr Chan said candidates must have high winning potential.

Touching on the party’s preparation, he was happy to note that party members from top to grassroots level were working very hard, particularly to gain the confidence of the people.

SUPP suffered its most serious setback in the last state election, losing eight of 19 allocated seats to the opposition.

The party has been gearing up for the state election and for Miri, a Miri-Sibuti Parliamentary Election Working Committee has been established recently as part of its early preparations.

Speculations have been rife that a snap poll could be called by Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud, with some observers believing it could be held in November while others said it is likely to be in the first quarter of next year.

Meanwhile, on another matter, Dr Chan called on Petronas to give local contractors a chance for contract projects. “Local contractors must be given a chance for Petronas oil and gas contracts because it is cheaper for Petronas instead of getting contractors from outside,” he remarked.
