Deputy Chief Minister and SUPP president Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr George Chan said he agreed with Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud’s view that his party must work closely with the Chinese community.

“SUPP must be able to maintain a close relationship and communicate with the Chinese community in order to maintain the spirit of cooperation and togetherness,” Dr Chan said when officiating at ‘Kwong Wai Siew Night’ here on Sunday.

In this regard, he called on the party’s Youth members to be both people and service oriented.

Turning to the celebration, he expressed confidence that it would leave happy memories, where participants would feel affection and love for the riverine town.

“Let this be a way of exchanging ideas in future.”

Dwelling on the history of the Cantonese community, he said they arrived in Kuching as early as 1854.

Apart from opening up land for their settlements, they also passed down the culture of excellence and cultural practices.

He noted that the various dialectal clans here were able to work closely together for the betterment of society.

Hence, for the future generations, Dr Chan said they must continue to work closely with one other, including people of other races.

He added: “We must share political strength for better future with other races.”

Among those present were Lanang MP Datuk Tiong Thai King and Pelawan assemblyman Vincent Goh.
