MIRI: A Sepak-takraw player from Miri suffered a horrendous deep gash on his neck, just above the collar-line, when he was ‘ambushed’ by a strand of glass-coated kite-string while he was riding his motorcycle.

EXCRUCIATING: The victim’s neck after it was cut by the glass-coated kite string.

The incident could have been life threatening, judging from the injury suffered, as well as the possibility of accident occurring.

It occurred along Pujut-Tanjung Batu, near Miri Airport by-pass, last Tuesday afternoon.

The victim, Mohammad Daud, who works with Laku Management Sdn Bhd suffered a serious-looking injury to his neck, with a wound 12 cm long; when the loose kite-string cut him on the neck, while he was returning home from work in Lambir at about 4.45pm.

“I felt excruciating pain in my neck immediately and was forced to stop promptly by the side of the road. I was suddenly in shock, when I realised that I had a deep, foot-long gash on my neck and was bleeding profusely. At the time, I hadn’t the faintest idea that the cause of my pain was a glass-coated string from somebody’s kite,” Daud said when interviewed by The Borneo Post, yesterday.

According to Daud, he was on his way for Sepak-takraw training at Piasau Jaya Phase II. When he was almost at the sepak-takraw court, the incident happened and very nearly caused him to fall down from his bike.

He said, after inspecting his injuries and seeing the seriousness of the gash on his neck, he immediately rushed to the Miri Polyclinic to seek emergency treatment.

He was later given 20 stitches on his neck, which was also heavily bandaged by the doctor who attended to him and was also ordered by the doctor to take two days sick-leave from work.

“I hope the authorities concerned or village committee members can oversee these children playing kites along the roadside which doesn’t only endanger the public, but also themselves,” he said, also adding, “I urge police to stop people carrying out this dangerous and totally pointless activity.”

Daud disclosed that he was lucky, even though he was in much pain and was given many agonising stitches for the neck-wound. Meanwhile, he exclaimed, “What if the dangerous glass-coated string had cut my eyes or severed my neck? That could have killed me!”

He disclosed that he will try to bear with the pain and continue his Sepak-takraw training, in preparation for the upcoming ‘Sarawak Trophy 2010’ Sepak-takraw Championships, which will be held in Miri from December 27 to 31.

Meanwhile, Miri Sepak-takraw Association chairman, Samion Gani hopes that the relevant authorities will immediately take action against the culprits, in avoidance of future incidents from this unsafe activity of kite-flying by the roadside.
