Family sought to look after stroke victim

TAWAU: Democratic Action Party (DAP) is looking for the family of Chong Sum, 67, who suffered from a stroke, so that they can take care of him.

DAP complaint bureau head Fung Thin Yein said a Good Samaritan by the name Harry had called him for help to search for Chong’s family.

He said Chong lived alone in Sungai Burung, Balung for more than 30 years and everyone knew him as he was always involved in all the village activities.

“He first came to Sg Burung when it was opened for logging. Then, he stayed behind and worked as a plantation worker in Sg Burung when it became an oil palm plantation,” he said.

Some people said he was married in Kalabakan before coming to Sg Burong alone. But, no one seemed to know his family or relative.

Fung said six months ago, Chong fell down and was brought to Tawau Hospital by Harry. After being given injection and some medication, Harry brought Chong to his house to take care of him.

Chong could still walk then. A week later, he lost his balance and fell in the bathroom. After five months at Harry’s house, Chong was sent to Tawau Hospital and was informed he had a stroke.

“After two days in Tawau Hospital, a doctor told Harry to bring Chong home. But Harry is unable to do so as his family is unable to take care of him,” he said, adding Chong cannot sit up or walk and stay in bed most of the time.

DAP Tawau hoped that anyone who knows Chong or his family or relative can call Fung Thin Yein at 013-8844700 or Tan Lee Fatt at 019-8533683.

He said DAP Tawau would like to thank Tawau Hospital for taking care of Chong for the time being and is arranging for his transfer to an old folks home.
