‘New Lapok road ready by 2013’

MIRI: More than 6,000 members of the Orang Ulu community from over 350 longhouses in Tinjar, Baram would definitely enjoy good road once the RM101 million 35.7-kilometre stretch of road in the area is completed in 2013.

Baram MP Datuk Jacob Sagan, in assuring the people, said construction work had started on September 6 last year and was progressing well.

Once completed, the road would provide access to the interior and central Baram and would also generate income and uplift the living standard of the folk there after more than 50 years of long wait, he said.

“I am pleased with the progress and development of the project and will continue to oversee it despite the weather condition,” he said here yesterday, disclosing that the physical progress was 0.2 per cent and earlier than scheduled.

To speed up the project which may be delayed due to the inclement weather and other obstacles, the Deputy Minister of International Trade and Industry, appealed to the local people to cooperate by giving way to the project if their stalls, fruit trees and oil palm seedlings get in the way of the road.

He also hoped that Sesco would move their electric poles if they obstruct the project.

When inspecting the road in Lapok on Monday, Sagan met with the main and sub-contractors of the project, and reminded them that the maintenance of the existing road should be carried out while building the new road.
