BINTULU: The police force, particularly in Bintulu, should improve their delivery service in tandem with the progress and development of the town and also to meet the public’s high expectation.

The call was made by head of IPK Sarawak (State Contingent Head Office) administrative management department ACP Sulaiman Abdul Razak just promoted from Bintulu police chief. He said efforts and initiatives have been put in place to enhance the delivery service of the police force, especially in dealing with the public.

“They (public) know their rights and they are the master and we are here to serve them,” he said after a ceremony to hand over duty as police chief to his deputy DSP Poniman Margiman at Bintulu police headquarters here yesterday. It was witnessed by Miri police chief ACP Jamaluddin Ibrahim.

DSP Poniman will take over as acting police chief.

Sulaiman also reminded members of the police force to work closely with the public who have the right to be served.

He said enhancing their delivery service meant avoiding ways and habits that invite complaints from the public.

“We have to change our mindset if they (public) don’t want to come to us, we go to them.

“Please don’t see our job (combating crime) as a problem but take it as a challenge and throw away any fear of crimes and most importantly treat the public as our friend,” he said.

He stressed that as police officers there should be no boundary or barrier between them and the public and the people must be seen as part of a big family.

Sulaiman who has been residing in Sarawak for about 35 years and served in Bintulu for the past 28 years also told them to practise good communication within their families to bridge gaps and promote understanding among family members.

He reminded members of the force to be sincere and dedicated to their jobs to avoid falling into negative habits like corruption.
