LUNDU: The number of registered voters in N3 Tanjung Datu constituency has not reached the desired figure.

Lundu district officer Azmi Bujang said till May last year, the total number of registered voters had declined to 7,864 compared to 7,973 as in 2006.

While attributing this to a number of factors, he also appealed to those reaching the eligible age to register themselves.

“Judging by the number of eligible people in the district, there should be a three per cent increase each year.

“From the period of 2006 to 2010, the number of registered voters should have shown an increase of 600.

“This shows that many eligible individuals have yet to register as voters and carry out their responsibilities as citizens,” said Azmi who was representing Special Advisor in the Chief Minister’s Department Tan Sri Datuk Amar Adenan Satem at a closing ceremony of a Rela Introductory Briefing with leaders at Chung Hua Hall here yesterday.

Adenan is also Tanjung Datu assemblyman.

Meanwhile Lundu District Rela Officer Lt. Col (Rela) Abang Salfian Abang Gani said the corps had successfully registered 412 new voters among its members and their families in 15 areas in the constituency.

Touching on the briefing, he said the objective was not only to register new voters among Rela members and their families but also to give talks on the present political scenario.

“The total number of Rela members in the district is 11,182 and 5,372 are in the N.3 Tanjung Datu constituency while 5,809 are in the N.1 Opar constituency.

“In respect of registration of voters, a total of 2,000 members are yet to register and many of them are below 21 years old.

“We will carry out this programme at all voting areas in this district to enable Rela members and their families register as voters,” he said.
