KUCHING: An operation to locate a Kuching-registered cargo ship was mounted yesterday after the vessel went missing while on its way to Sibu.

A spokesperson from the Maritime Department told The Borneo Post that a report of the disappearance was received at 8.30am from a representative of the company which owns the cargo ship.

“The company lost contact with the captain around 8am when the ship was roughly nine nautical miles off the coast of Kuala Rajang in Sarikei,” said the spokesperson when contacted yesterday evening.

Sea conditions at the time were described as rough due to torrential rain throughout all of yesterday.

An operation to locate the missing ship was initially launched by the Maritime Department, but was eventually called off due to unpermitting weather and rough sea conditions.

Meanwhile, it was learned the Marine Operations Force in Sarikei had also dispatched a team yesterday to the ship’s last known location, but was unable to spot any sign of the missing vessel.

A check with the Maritime Department at 8.30pm revealed there has been no new developments regarding the missing ship.
