‘Orphanage in Sibu will be completed by year-end’

KUCHING: The orphanage complex in Sibu still under construction will be completed by end of this year, revealed Assistant Minister in the Chief Minister’s Department Datuk Daud Abdul Rahman.

Costing around RM12 million, the complex, according to Daud, will be able to house 300 orphans.

“The construction of another complex to house the orphans is underway and is expected to complete by the end of this year,” he said.

According to him, it will cost between RM70,000 and RM80,000 to run the new complex.

He said this when receiving a courtesy visit by children and officials from Laila Taib Orphanage Complex, at his office yesterday.

The visit was to
thank Daud, who is in-charge of looking after the welfare of the orphans in the stated.

Beside the new complex, there are already two such complexes — one here, and another one in Miri.

Daud also said that some RM2 million funds was collected last year to run the two complexes in Kuching and Miri.

Of the amount, RM200,500 was from both the state and federal government, while the remaining from public donation.

He disclosed that the monthly cost to run the complex in Kuching and Miri, was RM75,000 and RM50,000, respectively.

Meanwhile, general manager of Sarawak Orphanage Welfare Board Juliyanah Abdul Hamid, said there were presently 40 orphans who have
achieved tertiary education, while some are already becoming engineers, accountants and geologists.
