SANDAKAN: Twenty-five People’s Housing Projects (PPR)have been implemented involving the construction of 20,000 housing units in Sabah in a move to eradicate squatter homes and help the low-income group to own houses.

Deputy Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Lajim Ukin said the construction of these houses began during the Eighth Malaysia Plan (8MP) and 9MP, with 18,700 units already completed and the remaining in the process of completion.

He said these projects were funded by the federal government while the state government provided the land, carried out the selection process and obtained buyers or tenants through the computerised open registration system.

A PPR home is rented for RM124 per month or sold for RM42,000 in Sabah and Sarawak, while units in Peninsular Malaysia are sold for RM35,000 each, he told reporters after handing over the Jalan Kem Tentera PPR to the state government, here yesterday.

The PPR, consisting of 500 units, was accepted by State Local Government and Housing Assistant Minister Datuk Ghulam Haidar Khan Bahadar.

He said the target market for the PPR homes were low-income earners and squatter residents with a monthly household income of less than RM2,500.

In future, Lajim said PPR projects in the country would be carried out under the buy-upon-completion policy to allow the low-income group to own property.

However, he said, in Sabah, the state government had requested to continue carrying out the rental policy. — Bernama
