73 untrained teachers want contracts extended

LAHAD DATU: Seventy-three untrained teachers here are unhappy with the Education Ministry for not extending their teaching contracts.

Two teachers, who acted as spokesmen for the 73 teachers, claimed that the Deputy Education Minister had issued a statement last month that their contracts should have been extended and they would be absorbed as permanent teachers in phases.

According to Rahima Sukarno, 35, who has served as a teacher for four years, they have written many application letters to be absorbed into the ‘Kursus Dalam Cuti (KDC)’ and Kursus Perguruan Lepas Ijazah (KPLI) but so far they have not received any reply.

“We hope that our contracts to serve our community will be extended and we can be absorbed into the KDC or KPLI programme and become permanent teachers,” Rahima said when she and Leza Patawi met Silam MP Salleh Kalbi yesterday.

The teachers sought Salleh’s support and help in submitting a memorandum, appealing for absorption into the KDC/KPLI Programme.

Meanwhile, Salleh said these untrained teachers should be absorbed into the KDC or KPLI programme as they, being degree holders, have the experience in teaching.

“I hope they can be absorbed into the KDC or KPLI programme, so they can be permanent teachers and serve the community,” he said.
