KUDAT: The Sabah Royal Customs Department seized contraband cigarettes of various brands worth RM31,212 from several open markets here, recently.

Its director Kassim Ismail when disclosing this said the operation was part of an effort to rid illegal peddling of contraband cigarettes launched statewide beginning Jan 5.

“In the operation which was carried out at the market area on Wednesday at around 10.30am, a total of 3,059 cigarette boxes were seized, which we believe were smuggled in illegally into the state from neighbouring countries.

“However, there were no arrests made as the cigarettes were found hidden at various places by its owners,” he said.

He therefore called on the public to continue providing information and help the department in its efforts to curb smuggling and selling of contraband goods in the state. — Bernama
