Assistant Minister in the Chief Minister’s Department Larry Sng said a total of 108 students applied this year, but 16 applications were still pending because of incomplete documentation.

The applicants, who are doing matriculation or attending tertiary institutions, will receive RM500 each.

Sng said the fund was set up to encourage young people in the Pelagus area to further their education.

“Gone are the days when Form 3 or Form 5 school leavers are able to get jobs in the private and public sector. In the past, Form 3 students were trained as school teachers, but now even kindergarten teachers are graduates,” he said.

Applicants can check the status of their applications during office hours at Sng’s service centre at the Bletih New Township.

Successful applicants will receive the aid during the Chinese New Year.

Some 800 students have benefited from the RM1 million education fund since it was established in 2001.
