KOTA KINABALU: A former DJ of a radio was jailed for two years by the magistrates’ court here yesterday for theft.

Magistrate Norhamizah Shaiffuddin found Awang Selamat, 27, guilty of stealing a woman’s handbag which contained MyKad, ATM cards, RM300 cash and four cellphones, altogether worth RM3,500.

In her judgement, Norhamizah said the defence had failed to cast reasonable doubts on the prosecution’s case.

The offence was committed inside a car at the roadside of Jalan Api-Api here on Sept 28, 2010.

He was convicted under Section 379 of the Penal Code which carries a maximum seven years’ jail or with a fine or both upon conviction.

In an unrelated case, local Asri Selok, 43, received a total of eight years’ jail for two counts of possessing drugs.

Norhamizah, in finding Asri guilty of the charges, held that the prosecution had proved its case beyond reasonable doubts.

For the first count of possessing 9.91 grammes of ketamine in front of a post office here on April 15, he was jailed for four years.

On the second charge, Asri received another four years’ jail for possessing 0.64 grammes of syabu at the same time and place.

Each of the charges framed under Section 12 (3) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 carries a maximum fine of RM100,000 or a jail term of up to five years or both upon conviction.

In passing sentence, Norhamizah ordered Asri to serve his jail terms concurrently.

Deputy public prosecutor Wan Azwan Aiman Wan Fakhruddin had called four witnesses to testify against Asri.
