KUCHING: A total of 30 underprivileged Chinese families were chosen to receive some Chinese New Year goodies as a festive gesture from the state government’s Service Welfare and Recreation Council (Maksak) Ladies’ Executive Committee.

Under the annual welfare project, the less fortunate folks are remembered during major festivals so that they will not be left out of the celebration.

“This welfare project is aimed at fostering closer and harmonious ties between civil servants and local residents. In an effort to understand the hardships faced by the less fortunate, Maksak organises activities like this every year,” said Maksak Ladies’ Executive Committee president Datin Amar Saptuyah Suib at the simple but meaningful ceremony at Maksak headquarters yesterday.

She said the families were from the urban poor in Kuching and were identified by the state Welfare Department and also by a non-governmental organisation, Society for Kuching Urban Poor (Skup).

“The women of Maksak are very concerned with the welfare of not only their own members but also members of the public who are in need of assistance. Skup members are fully committed in providing the basic needs to the families under their care and I hope such dedication will continue,” said Saptuyah.

Each of the family received a ‘goodie’ bag and ‘angpow’ worth RM150.
