KUCHING: The Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) used in Chinese-medium schools will most likely be recognised by the government soon.

Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr George Chan said Prime Minister Datuk Seri
Najib Tun Razak had expressed his concern on the issue.

“PM has been more outspoken about it and in the next few years it will most probably be recognised. Soon, very soon,” he told reporters on Tuesday night after opening The Federation of Kuching Division Community Associations annual general meeting.

“Our PM said certain conditions must be fulfilled in order for UEC to be recognised, but once the conditions are fulfilled, it should be recognised,” he added.

Dr Chan, who is also Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) president, said SUPP was fighting for UEC recognition.

“Mandarin is being used a lot these days, especially in businesses and trade with China that is emerging as a world economic power,” he added.
