Samarahan athletes urged to aim higher

KUCHING: Samarahan athletes have been urged to set a higher goal in the state-level cross-country competition here later this year.

Making this call, Samaharan District education officer Mahli Rosli said the district had many runners capable of winning medals in this event.

“If you (Samarahan team) finished third last year, make it your target to win the overall title this time around year,” he said at the closing of the recent Samarahan Division Inter-Secondary Schools Cross Country Competition at SMK Wira Penrisson school hall.

Over 500 students from 15 secondary schools in the division took part.

Mahli said the big number of participants was ‘a very good sign’ of the students’ interests in sports.

He urged the teachers to encourage more students to take part in sports.

“If we don’t take the first step, we won’t know we have the talents,” he added.

He was also happy to note that the participants were physically fit, saying with the correct coaching, they could become good runners in the future.

Meanwhile, 40 students, including 20 girls, were selected for the Samarahan team.

There are only four categories — Boys and Girls U-18, Boys and Girls U-15 — in the state level.
