PENAMPANG: Five men, including a higher learning institution student, were arrested by police for allegedly stealing and possessing car sport rims.

District police chief DSP Madang Usat said police detained the first suspect in KK Times Square around 3am on Jan 23.

“Following the arrest police nabbed another accomplice in the same place half an hour later while the remanding suspects, including the buyer, were picked up around 8am the same day in Kampung Likas,” he said at a press conference at the Penampang police station yesterday.

According to Madang, two of the stolen sport rims were found in one of the suspects’ house while the third was recovered from the buyer.

The suspects, aged between 18 and 22, were remanded to facilitate investigation under Section 379 of Penal Code, while the student was also remanded for investigation under Section 411 of Penal Code for suspicion of buying stolen goods.

Meanwhile, two local men, aged 22 and 32, were detained by police yesterday for wire theft.

Madang said the suspects were nabbed following a police report lodged by a 66-year-old complainant at the Karamunsing police station on Jan 27.

According to Madang, the complainant had told police that he saw the suspects attempting to break into his storehouse in Lok Kawi around 12.30am. The complainant also provided police the car registration number used by the suspects.

Following the report, the police in Penampang were alerted and a mobile patrol vehicle (MPV) were immediately dispatched to the scene.

“Upon reaching the scene, the suspects immediately sped off in their vehicles.

Around 5.30am the same day, police saw both of the vehicles parked on a hill in Kampung Potuki along the old Papar Road and immediately detained the suspects,” said Madang, adding the suspects then led police to the stolen wire dumped along Inanam Road.

The case would be investigated under Section 380 of the Penal Code.
