BARISAN Nasional (BN) candidate for the Tenang state seat by-election Mohd Azahar Ibrahim hoped the positive support he got from voters during the campaign would be translated into votes on the polling day.

“I hope the voters will cast their ballots for Barisan Nasional (BN) for continued development in the constituency,” he told reporters during the by-election campaign at the Bukit Dato Estate here yesterday.

Mohd Azahar, who was accompanied by his wife, Tuty Roshizana Tumin were given a rousing welcome by the residents, mostly Indians, who were taking part in the 1Malaysia Youth Telematch 2011.

The former Rengit sub-district assistant district officer later took part in a tug-of-war, much to the delight of the residents.

On the campaign, Mohd Azahar, who is fondly known as ‘Tok Ai’ among the locals, said it got him closer to the people.

“I start my campaign rounds at 6.30am and sleep hardly four hours everyday,” he said, adding that he would be amenable to the people, if elected.

A resident, R.Ponnusamy, 78, said he hoped the BN would continue to develop the constituency if Azahar was elected.

Bukit Dato Estate assistant manager A.Saravana Kumar said he hoped the government would upgrade the unpaved road leading to the estate’s housing
area from the Tenang Station town, a distance of 7km, for the benefits of the
residents.

Labis-born Mohd Azahar, who is also a son of a former Tenang assemblyman, the late Ibrahim Daud, will be facing PAS candidate Normala Sudirman in the
by-election on Sunday.
