KUALA LUMPUR: Twelve deaths were recorded on the third day of nationwide traffic police operation Ops Sikap 23 Saturday, bringing the total number of fatalities to 37.
The dead comprised seven motorcyclists, two motorists, lorry driver, cyclist and a pedestrian, according to the police in its website report.
Of the 1,314 accidents which occurred Saturday, municipal roads recorded the highest number at 514, followed by federal roads (337), state roads (214), highways (179) and 70 cases on other roads.
A total of 7,452 summonses were issued for various traffic offences.
Ops Sikap 23, launched in conjunction with the coming Chinese New Year, is aimed at educating road users on careful driving, with a view to reduce fatal accidents during festive season.
It will end on Feb 10.
Meanwhile in Alor Setar, Kedah police deputy chief Datuk Abdul Ghafar Rajab said the police were targeting at reducing road fatalities by five per cent during Ops Sikap. — Bernama
