KUCHING: The Information, Communications and Cultures Ministry will refine the distribution method for one million 1Malaysia laptop computers to ensure that those who are eligible would receive the allocation.

Its deputy minister Datuk Joseph Salang Gandum said he had received complaints that there were students and schools that were eligible but did not receive the allocation.

The ministry would work with relevant parties especially community leaders and people’s representatives to ensure eligible students will receive the 1Malaysia laptops, he added.

“As many as 123,000 units of laptop PCs have been distributed throughout the country during the first phase of distribution that started in June last year.

“Sarawak was allocated 10 percent of that total that is around 14,000 units. The 1Malaysia laptop distribution will continue in stages until end of this year to achieve the target of 60 percent of national broadband coverage,” he said.

Salang was speaking after the distribution of two laptop units to the Malaysian Ex-Services Association (PBTM), Sarawak branch on Saturday.

Also present at the ceremony were PBTM chairman Spencer Birai, advisor Major (B) Peter Runin, Army Veteran Affairs Department director Major Monday Juhid and PBTM secretary Kamalmirza Abdullah.

Salang hoped the ministry’s contribution would help the association in new members registration at all 18 branches as well as unregistered areas.

To-date, the association has 18 branches located in Lundu, Kuching, Batu Kawa, Tasik Biru, Samarahan, Serian, Semanggang, Sarikei, Sibu, Bintulu, Limbang, Lawas, Miri, Kanowit, Kapit, Serdeng-Matu/Daro and Nangka with a total of 13,000 registered members.
