PENAMPANG: The Penampang District Council is waiting for the Public Works Department (PWD) to give the estimated cost of rebuilding the Donggongon market, said Assistant Mnister to the Chief Minister Datuk Edward Khoo.

The Kapayan assemblyman said construction of the new Donggongon central market would commence once the cost had been determined.

“The PWD is currently evaluating the cost and work is expected to start sometime this year. The government understands the need for a new market to be built.

“I know a lot of people are very concerned about this market and the government is doing its part,” he said during a Chinese New Year celebration with children from the various children’s homes at Megalong complex here yesterday.

Last week, Penampang District Officer William Sampil was reported as saying that the razed central market had been declared unsafe and would be demolished to make way for a new building.

He also disclosed that the architectural concept of the new market would be submitted this week.

The fire that destroyed the market in May last year forced about 80 stall owners to be relocated to the tamu ground, operating their business only between Saturdays to Wednesdays.
