KUCHING: Despite extending his contract with government for another two years recently, Prof Dr Sim Kui Hian, Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) head of Cardiac Unit, has not ruled out standing as a candidate for his party Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) in the next election.

MAN IN THE NEWS: Dr Sim with Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud during the SUPP Chinese New Year gathering.

Speaking during a SUPP Chinese New Year gathering here yesterday in response to speculations that he had been ruled out as candidate for SUPP because of the extension of his service, Dr Sim said the contract was not iron-clad and that any contract could be terminated.

On the verbal offer of a post in Putrajaya made by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak to him during the opening of the SGH Heart Centre on Jan 1, Dr Sim said he had not heard anything further about it and that he had no clue what the position would be aside from it being a senior position related to his work and experience.

However, if he remained in the federal government service he would abide by any directive to serve anywhere in the country, he added.

Dr Sim, who is the front-runner for the SUPP candidacy in Pending, said he had not made any decision yet on his career as nothing had been finalised and that he was leaving all his options open but whatever decision he had to make would be in the best interest of the nation.

Meanwhile SUPP secretary-general Datuk Sim Kheng Hui when asked to comment on Dr Sim’s position and the possibility of him standing in Pending under SUPP ticket said if political exigency required, Dr Sim’s contract with the government could be terminated to allow him to stand.
