Compassionate fund for flood victims – Musa

SANDAKAN: Flood victims in the state have been assured of compassionate fund from the National Security Council (NSC).

Disclosing this during an MCA Chinese New Year open house at Yu Yuan Hall, here on Thursday, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Haji Aman said every district affected by flood in view of the current wet spell had been identified.

The compassionate fund is to be channeled through the district flood operation centre that will manage aid.

Musa said all flood victims throughout the country would get equal amount of aid from the NSC.

“We’ve been preparing for this situation and the operation centre in every district affected by flood is operating now to channel aid to victims,” he said during a press conference after attending the MCA CNY open house.

Earlier, Musa handed out compassionate funds to 36 heads of households from Gum-Gum flood relief centre and 29 heads of households from Sim-Sim Youth Hall along with three heirs of victims who perished in flood and landslides.

All families affected by the recent flood received RM500 each while heirs of the victims received RM5,000 from NSC through the National Disaster Relief Fund.

A total of 532 people from 52 families were evacuated to the temporary relief centre at Sim-Sim Youth Hall and 166 people from 37 families were evacuated to Gum-Gum Hall.

Meanwhile, Musa fully supported a proposal to create the flood warning system in this state as a precautionary step to face flood.
