KUALA LUMPUR: City dwellers, especially those in the so-called Greater Kuala Lumpur (Greater KL) area, will catch a glimpse of the 51km-Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) during its three-month public display, beginning Monday.

The Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) said the event would highlight alignment details of the Sungai Buloh-Kajang line, land acquisition plan, project construction details and station features.

The Klang Valley MRT Open Day, to be held on Sunday at the Mid Valley Convention Centre, will kickstart the display of the RM36.6 billion Sungai Buloh-Kajang line, of which 9.5km is underground.

SPAD, which made the announcement in advertisments in leading newspapers, said the open day event would be followed by a public display at seven locations for three months, ending May 14.

The locations are at the premises of the Kuala Lumpur City Hall, Petaling Jaya City Council, Shah Alam City Council, Selayang Municipal Council and Kajang Municipal Council, as well as at Bangsar LRT Station and the SPAD office in Menara Dayabumi.

During the MRT public display, the public are also invited to inspect the plan and details and submit feedback on the project to SPAD by emailing at [email protected] on or before May 14.

SPAD said there would be 35 stations along the line, with construction period from this year to 2016.

Upon completion, the line will provide efficient train service to 1.2 million people with an estimated daily ridership of over 400,000 passengers.

Initiated in the Greater KL under the Economic Transformation Programme, the MRT’s objective is to eventually increase the rail share of passenger trips from 400,000 trips to 2.5 million trips daily in 2020. This high-speed and large-scale MRT rail project was revealed when the prime minister tabled the RM230 billion 10th Malaysia Plan (2011-2015) on June 10 last year.
