SIBU: The country’s crime index under the National Key Results Area (NKRA) last year, saw a drop of 15 per cent.

The target was five per cent.

Deputy Inspector-General of Police Datuk Hussin Ismail disclosed this at a media conference at Sibu Jaya police station yesterday.

Last year, street crimes in the country dropped by 35 per cent, he added, saying the target was 20 per cent.

“We will continue to bring down the index this year,” he enthused.

He said the establishment of Royal Police Malaysia (PDRM) training institute, Sarawak contingent would help to reduce crimes by providing training to the police officers in the central region.

He said crimes could be reduced by putting more officers at strategic locations (hot spots).

“We are identifying the hot spots,” he said.

Hussin also called for public cooperation in combating crimes, and said the people could do a lot by helping to tip-off the police.

“The public may call our 24 hours intelligence unit for faster response.

“The unit helps police to act immediately after receiving the tip-off,” he explained.

He also touched on the Police Reporting System (PRS) which he said would be introduced not only in Kuching but also Miri, Bintulu and other areas.

The system expedited police reaction to any complaint received, he said.
