SHAH ALAM: The Shah Alam High Court yesterday fixed May 23 for hearing of the application for judicial review of the Coroner’s Court open verdict decision on Teoh Beng Hock’s death.

The application for judicial review was filed by Attorney-General Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail. Judge Datuk Wira Mohtarudin Baki fixed the date after the prosecution led by deputy public prosecutor Dzulkifli Ahmad asked for a hearing date.

Teoh’s family lawyer Karpal Singh did not object to the date fixed by Mohtarudin.

Karpal told reporters that the judicial review was independent of the Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) to investigate Teoh’s death which sat on Monday.

He said the RCI should not convene simultaneously with judicial review proceedings.

“This is the main reason why we are not participating in proceedings of the Royal Comission of Inquiry,” he said. It was reported that the application for judicial review was filed on Jan 7 while RCI was set up on Jan 26.

Teoh, 30, aide to Selangor Exco member Ean Yong Hian Wah, was found dead on July 16, 2009 after giving a statement to Selangor Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) at Level 14, Plaza Masalam in Seksyen 9 here. — Bernama
