SANDAKAN: The Sandakan Anti-Coal Plant Action Committee chairman Stephen Wong said the committee would be dissolved soon as there is nothing to ‘anti’ anymore since the government has scrapped the proposed 300MW coal plant in Lahad Datu.

“The announcement by the government brought joy to a lot of people as it removed one big burden of worrying about the plant and we must thank Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Hj Aman and the state cabinet for the good move,” said Wong.

Meanwhile, activist Teo said the government was serious in their decision and that it was not to sweet-talk voters for the 13th general election.

Elopura state assemblyman Au Kam Wah has urged the government to look for an alternative way to generate power in the state since it has scrapped the controversial coal-fired power plant in Sinakut, Tungu in Lahad Datu.

He said the government must embark immediately on plans to look for alternative energy sources, namely gas or liquefied natural gas (LNG).

“It’s a good decision that fulfilled the wish of the people who don’t want the coal plant here. It’s a Chinese New Year gift from the government,” said Au in a released statement.

He proposed that a 300MW LNG plant be built here so that it would boost economic development.

He also took the opportunity to thank the state and federal governments who had listened to the strong voice of rejection from the people against the coal-plant project.
