Chin: Dangerous to erect racial or religious barriers

MIRI: Malaysians must never erect racial or religious barriers because such a move could plunge the country into chaos.

Minister of Energy, Green Technology and Water Datuk Seri Peter Chin said Malaysia is a multi-racialand multi-religious society and everyone must accept this fact so that the prevailing unity and harmony could continue to flourish.

“Whether we are at work or socialising, we will meet and mix with people from different racial, social and religious backgrounds. As such, we must never create walls or barriers (among Malaysians),” he said at ‘N.64 Pujut Karnival Mesra Belia Negeri Sarawak’ here yesterday.

Chin stressed that in the event such walls or barriers were erected, prejudice and ill-feelings would, among others, arise and the nation would not be able to function properly.

It is primarily for this reason that the government had been organising a myriad of programmes and activities to foster unity, tolerance and goodwill among all the races since the country achieved independence, he said.

“Only with unity and harmony can we achieve our vision and mission of becoming a developed and advanced nation by 2020.

“Therefore, it is important for the people to support such programmes and activities.”
