SIBU: A farmer was yesterday arrested by police for threatening a construction site foreman by firing two shots in the air and one to the ground.

SEIZED: Senior investigating officer ASP Yeoh Chun Shyan looks on as a policeman checks the shotgun.

He was said to have pulled the trigger as a warning to the foreman for allegedly stealing rubber sheets from his rubber estate.

The farmer approached the foreman, known only as Hii, at his construction site in Permai last Sunday at 7pm purportedly to talk about the stolen rubber sheets.

During the encounter, the farmer allegedly accused Hii’s workers of stealing five gunny sacks of rubber sheets from his rubber estate at Mile 5 Oya Road. When Hii, 34, denied the charge, the farmer fired three shots.

It was said that there were at least two persons witnessing the incident.

The police detained the 46-year-old farmer at his longhouse at Rumah Dick at Mile 8 Oya Road at about 2.30am yesterday, acting on a report lodged by Hii at 1am.

But they could not find the shotgun.

Later, the farmer brought them to Mile 8 Oya Road to show them the shotgun, which police seized together with three bullets.

Initial investigation showed the suspect had no licence to own the gun which is registered in Julau under his father’s name.

The farmer is being remanded for five days, starting yesterday.
