‘Logo design chance for youths to portray unity’


KUCHING: Sarawak Unity Foundation (YPS), Sarawak Development Institute (SDI) and Faradale Media Sdn Bhd, are jointly organising a logo design competition that will provide youths the opportunity to come up with a design that best represents the spirit of unity in the state.

Entries for the competition started yesterday and will close on May 31. It is open to all Sarawakians aged between 16 and 25 years and students of higher learning institutions are encouraged to participate.

Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr George Chan, who was at the media conference yesterday to launch the competition, said he was happy to get the participation of youths.

YPS secretary to Board of Trustees Mark Noel Bonchol was also present during the conference.

“We hope that they (youths) can actually participate because it is not only about the prize money, but the idealism about
how they can project this unity among themselves,” he said.

Winning entries will get RM3,000 for first prize, RM2,000 and RM1,000 for second and third prizes respectively.

Dr Chan said it was important that youths crystalise their ideas on unity in the competition.

The Industrial Development, Tourism and Heritage Minister also said unity among the different races and religions must be cherished and preserved at all times.

“One of the most important things in Sarawak is unity among all races and we are very fortunate that right from the day we got Independence we have a very united people in the state.

“Our past leaders have been stressing this repeatedly not only with words, but with actions,” he said, adding that unity is of paramount importance as far as the state and leaders are concerned.

The competition is part of Sarawak Youth for Unity 2011 programmes.

Other programmes are dialogue series with youths on Continuing the Legacy of Freedom and Harmony under the 1Malaysia Concept, Heritage of Unity Artwork Competition, Intercultural Youth Forum, Short Films Competition and Unity Lecture Series.
