S’wak BN Convention to strengthen BN unity — SUPP chief

KUCHING: The Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) is confident that the Barisan Nasional (BN) Convention scheduled this weekend will secure a formidable force for the state Barisan Nasional (BN) to face the imminent state election, its president Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr George Chan said yesterday.

Dr Chan, who is also a Deputy Chief Minister, said SUPP hoped that the state BN coalition would work together as a united front in the aftermath of the convention, which was expected to be crucial amidst rife speculation that the 71-member Sarawak assembly could be dissolved by the middle of this month.

“We will go into this election as a strong BN,” he told a media conference in conjunction with the “Logo Design Competition” for the Sarawak Unity Foundation at his office in Wisma Bapa Malaysia, Petra Jaya here.

About 5,000 delegates from all the four state BN component parties and policy implementors will also be given a chance to touch on pertinent issues, especially on the Economic Transformation Programme (ETP) and how to translate it to improve services to the people.

While conceding that he did not know the exact date of the state polls, Dr Chan was optimistic SUPP would perform better than the 2006 state election based on the party’s hard work, new concept of thinking and a mixture of new faces and veterans to be fielded in the 19 seats being allocated to it. — Bernama
