Man jailed for stealing mobile phone at work place

TAWAU: The magistrates’ court here yesterday sentenced a 42-year-old man to seven years’ jail for stealing a Nokia cell phone at his work place here.

Mazlan B Adenan pleaded guilty before magistrate Ferhansha Farene to a charge under Section 380 of the Penal Code which carries a jail term up to 20 years  and fine.

Prosecuting  officer  Chief Inspector  Joan  Lee told the court that the accused had committed the offence at Institut Memandu Cemerlang, Jalan Damai here about 2.50pm on February 23, this year.

The police revealed that the accused had planned to meet his manager over his commission about 2.30pm that day but the latter had gone out.

An officer, Upe Ali, 47, asked the accused to wait for a while.

Mazlan then sat on a chair in front of the desk of the officer.

When the officer went to a meeting room, he stole her cell phone which was placed on the table and walked away.

The accused  then pawned the cell phone worth RM600 at a shop at Jalan Dunlop here for RM50 and spent all the money.

Police detained the accused in  front of the court building around 12.45pm, Jalan Persatuan and seized a receipt of the phone that he had pawned.
