KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysia Automotive Institute (MAI), an agency under the Ministry of International Trade and Industry, is collaborating with Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP), to produce 5,600 automotive engineers by 2015.

The move is to enhance the competitiveness of the local automotive industry, said MAI’s chief executive officer Madani Sahari.

“MAI and UMP would work together to develop an automotive apprenticeship programme for the benefit of the industry,” he said during the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding here yesterday between MAI and UMP.

He said the programme would see undergraduates of two courses (Mould Engineering and Dies Engineering) working alongside engineers at original equipment manufacturers or vendors during their industrial practical training.

“A significant part of this partnership will be the ability for UMP to provide component testing services currently not available in the country and to develop advanced automotive components technology for over 20 automotive suppliers,” he said.

The MAI-UMP collaboration was set to yield results in many areas that would make Malaysian automotive industry a leader in its field.

The venture would offer testing facilities that include testing analysis and various other services at a competitive price.—Bernama
