Pending rep says Dr Sim can serve people better as doctor

KUCHING: Considering that the country is facing a shortage of doctors, the people would be better off having cardiologist Prof Dr Sim Kui Hian continue heading Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) Heart Centre in Kota Samarahan rather than serving as a politician.

Pending assemblywoman Violet Yong felt that nominating Dr Sim as Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) candidate for Pending in the coming state election would be a big loss not only to the medical fraternity but also the community as a whole.

“This shortage is a serious matter. Now why would SUPP want to sacrifice a very good doctor to become a politician at the people’s expense?” Yong questioned at a press conference at the Democratic Action Party (DAP) headquarters at Jalan Datuk Abang Abdul Rahim here yesterday.

She added that although Dr Sim has announced a replacement if he were to resign from his SGH Heart Centre specialist post to contest as SUPP candidate in Pending, the issue faced by the people here was never about finding his replacement but the insufficient doctor to people ratio in this country.

Dr Sim, when met by the media after attending a function here on March 13, did not rule himself out in contesting in the next State election when he stated that as a politician, he was positive he could serve the community better or even transform the society such as what he did in elevating the medical industry.

He said this was all possible due to the ‘similarities between political system and the human body’.
