TAWAU: There is very low chance for the radioactive particles from the nuclear explosion in Fukushima, Japan reaching Malaysia as the particles are still contained within the plant.

Tawau member of parliament Datuk Chua Soon Bui said she had posted a written question to the Health Ministry at the parliament following circulation of SMS (Short Message Service) that started about two days ago regarding advice to be taken to avoid radioactive particles in cloud or possibly acid rain that might reach Malaysia from the nuclear plant explosion.

“It is a great concern to all Malaysians and the need to know whether it is true that the radioactive particles would have contagious effect causing health hazards or endangering human safety for short term or long-term impact if it reaches Malaysia,” she said.

Chua said Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai replied that the Atomic Agency had announced that the radioactive particles are still contained within the plant and so far there is no worry that it will reach Malaysia.

He said that if it reached Malaysia, the Ministry of Health would advise the public to take potassium iodide tablet as a preventive measure.

He said more measures would be introduced if it happened but he was quite sure that it was highly unlikely to happen.
