‘Online personal attacks shameful’

MIRI: The Sarawak Barisan Nasional (BN) has slammed what it called the ‘dirty tactics’ of the opposition in launching personal attacks against potential BN candidates on the Internet.

SUPP president Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr George Chan said the shameful onslaught online was meant to garner cheap political mileage.

He said the online antics had to be the work of the opposition because it was not the BN’s style to do such things.

“This is not the way to win elections. We (BN) are looking for honest people and we want to win not based on lies and wild accusations,” said Dr Chan when met by reporters at the Public Works Department (JKR) Miri yesterday.

Dr Chan, who is also Deputy Chief Minister, believed that more wild accusations and baseless rumours would be posted online in the coming weeks as the state election neared.

He added that it would be a waste of time to clear the air on wild accusations, unless it was serious.

“When it comes to election time, there will be more lies and wild accusations. We would not have time and the ability to answer every accusation. But we (BN) have to speak the truth when it involves something serious,” he remarked.

Dr Chan, however, believed that Sarawakians were matured enough to make rational judgments.

In the context of Miri, he said: “The future developments of Miri depend on good, honest people who can truly fulfil promises. I will be very sad if we don’t have good people here because Miri has great potential to further progress.”

On SUPP’s candidates, Dr Chan again remained tight-lipped.

“I have already finalised the candidates, but then again the final decision is up to the top leaders,” he said.

Recently, Dr Chan mentioned that SUPP had decided not to field “recycled” candidates in the state election, except if he or she is a “winnable” candidate.
