MPI urged to step up efforts on establishing National Media Council

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Press Institute (MPI) needs to step up efforts on establishing the National Media Council (NMC) to look after the future of media practitioners in Malaysia.

Utusan Malaysia assistant group editor-in-chief Datuk Zaini Hassan said it should be expedited because local media practitioners lacked a platform to protect them.

“It is time for the council to be set up because many are saying that our media needs to be protected and regulated freely and professionally.

“At the same time, the media will also be placed under a more organised structure,” he said this during an interview with Bernama Radio24’s Hot Seat programme.

Zaini said the NMC was not aimed at controlling journalists but was more towards facilitating the flow of their work.

The NMC will also provide journalists an avenue to air their woes and resolve issues without involving legal processes which can be time-consuming and costly, he said. — Bernama
