KUALA LUMPUR: The public need not be unduly alarmed over the recent seizure of weapon parts from two containers of a ship anchored at West Port, Port Klang here, said Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein.

“Since it does not pose any threat to the country and it can be addressed, I don’t have to alarm the public,” he said, adding that Malaysian authorities would liaise with international intelligence (network) and experts to resolve the matter.

Hishammuddin was speaking at a news conference in Parliament Lobby here yesterday, when asked to comment on the seizure of the containers.

He said the seizure of the containers was nothing unique nor unusual, adding that such cases had happened before.

“In the past, we have dealt with serious cases that come to us without people knowing (about) and without causing security threat. So, we just have to deal with it profesionally,” he said.

Yesterday, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ismail Omar confirmed that two containers seized by the police from a ship anchored at West Port recently, contained weapon components.

The ship from China was bound for Iran when the police intercepted it, based on intelligence.

Ismail said the detention of the ship was proof that security of Malaysian waters was constantly being monitored.

On another issue, Hishammuddin said the stamping of serial numbers on the 5,100 Bahasa Malaysia Bibles, currently being held in Port Klang, was a practice since former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s time.

He said it was not the ministry’s intention to deface the Christian Holy Book. — Bernama
