SIBU:
Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) deputy chairman Daniel Ngieng said the first round of budget hotel evaluation would be conducted in May and June.

Speaking at a press conference yesterday, he said the ‘Budget Hotel Award 2011’ competition was the council’s effort to improve cleanliness and image of all budget hotels.

“We will be evaluating 47 hotels this year and we will give award to the winners,” he said, adding that the second round would be in September and October.

Ngieng said the competition was part of the council’s effort to show it was serious about improving the standard of budget hotels. “Hotels are very important to the image of Sibu, that is why we emphasise the cleanliness of the budget hotels,” he pointed.

After the assessment, the hotels would be categorized into class A, class B, class C or class D.

“Those getting class D would not be able to renew their licence until they have shown improvement on cleanliness,” he warned.

Also present at the press conference was the Sarawak Central Region Hotels Association chairman Johnny Wong Sie Lee.
