THE government spent RM27.9 million to assist flood victims last year and early this year, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz said yesterday.

He said aid in the form of daily necessities, food, blankets and mats were distributed to the victims through the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry.

“The government also allocated RM500 as compassionate fund for families affected by the floods last year and early this year,” he said when replying to a question from Datuk Mohamed Aziz (BN-Sri Gading) in the Dewan Rakyat.

Mohamed had wanted to know how much the government allocated for flood victims in Johor, Melaka, Negeri Sembilan and Pahang last month.

In reply to a supplementary question, from Mahfuz Omar (PAS-Pokok Sena), on the allocations for other states, Mohamed Nazri said RM15.5 million was spent to assist 30,948 families in Kedah, RM8.3 million to assist 16,457 families in Perlis and RM70,100 to assist 402 families in Terengganu.

He also said that the government distributed RM70,500 to 141 families in Kelantan, RM15,000 to 21 families in Melaka, RM52,000 to 104 families in Johor and RM23,500 to 493 families in Pahang.

In a written reply to a question from Lim Lip Eng (DAP-Segambut), Mohamed Nazri said the Natural Resources and Environment Ministry had informed the National Security Council that the comprehensive study on the nationwide flood mitigation programme had been completed.

“However, the programme has to be implemented in stages according to priority (areas) in view of the heavy investment involved,” he said.
