KUALA LUMPUR: Radioactive pollution emitted from Japan’s tsunami-damaged Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant will not reach Malaysia, Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Seri Dr Maximus Ongkili said.

He said the pollution was moving towards the northeast of Japan from Sunday to yesterday before moving northwesterly until tomorrow.

“Its movement is confined within Japan and will not reach Malaysia,” he said in a statement.

Ongkili also said that monitoring carried out on food items in Japan showed the presence of radioactive substance, Iodin-131, in milk, spinach and onion leaves.

“The authorities in Japan have already imposed an export ban on these items,” he said.

The ministry, he added, would monitor the situation daily through the Atomic Energy Licensing Board and the Malaysian Meteorological Department.

Nationwide monitoring showed a normal reading yesterday, he said. — Bernama
