KOTA KINABALU: More than 2,500 people have applied to be firefighters and rescuers.

State Fire and Rescue Department director Khirudin Drahman said although the number of applicants had increased, only 10 per cent would be accepted.

“This is to fill the 85 vacancies within the department in Sabah,” he said yesterday.

Khirudin said most of the applicants were Bumiputera but the department had also received non-Bumiputeras during the one-week open interview.

“We hope more non-Bumiputeras would apply to become firefighters and rescuers as we have a number of non-Bumiputeras who are holding high positions within the department,” he said.
