KUALA LUMPUR: Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Pandikar Amin Mulia yesterday launched a handbook titled ‘Understanding the Dewan Rakyat’, at parliament, here.

The 500-page book, which is an expanded version of an earlier project by independent news site, The Nut Graph, contains comprehensive profile of all of Malaysia’s 222 elected representatives and their stand on issues concerning human development and democracy.

Among the issues are the Internal Security Act, the Islamic versus secular state and freedom of information.

Pandikar Amin in his speech said the book was a useful guide to the Malaysian political landscape, with MPs giving their perspectives on the Dewan Rakyat.

“I’ve found it very informative as it features a simple and straight-forward guide on the Federal Constitution and how the country is governed.

“The book also provides anwers to help readers understand Malaysia’s system of governance and how power is vested in parliament and in those who are elected to represent the people,” said Pandikar Amin who also congratulated the 130 MPs who contributed to the book.

The book, also supported by Bar Council and the German foundation Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung, is aimed at voters, the media, political parties, analysts and MPs themselves. — Bernama
