SIBU: Nicholas Yew Hau Tung from SMK Methodist was in seventh heaven yesterday when he found out that he was one of the top students in the country in the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM).

Yew knew he got straight 10A+ through a friend’s father. However, no one mentioned about him being one of the tops in the country.

“I was at the school stadium. I was very happy and a bit shocked by the news. As soon as I knew it, I called my dad,” he said.

Asked about his secret to his good result, he said it was all about being a good student.

He said he was attentive in class and always stayed focus.

“If I do not understand, I would take the initiative to ask. I did my homework every day and am very consistent in my study time. I never study at the last minute,” he said, adding that he spent about three hours a day to study.

Apart from his consistency, he said the encouragement from teachers, parents, friends, and church members had helped him to strive harder for good results.

“My greatest gratitude is to God because he blessed me with this result,” he enthused.

Yew, who is the eldest of three siblings, said he was quite active in school activities. He was in the Boys Brigade since he was in primary school, represented his school for some quizzes, and was a school prefect.

“I think I have a balanced life. I never pressure myself in everything I do. Although I study hard, but I do spend time watching television and have outdoor activities with my friends,” he said.

Yew, who is currently doing his ‘A Level’ in Sunway College, said he planned to apply for JPA scholarship to pursue his study further.

He hoped to be able to study medicine abroad.

When met yesterday, Yew’s father, Dr Julian Yew Kwang Tiew, was still absorbing the surprising news.

He said he had never expected his son to be one of the tops in Malaysia.

“Being a doctor and owning a clinic in town, I am a very busy man. So is my wife who is a dentist in the general hospital. Nevertheless, he is a good son. He would study without force and I’ve never pressured my children,” he said.
