TAWAU: Five SMK Tawau students scored 10As in the 2010 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination while the school’s passing rate increased to 97.5 per cent from 96.9 per cent the previous year.

Its principal, Eko Sukohidayat, was happy with the improved overall passing rate although the school’s School Average Grade dropped slight from 4.32 in 2009 to 4.42 last year.

The school produced five 10As scorers – Nur Shuhada Binti Mohd Firdaus Wong, Fong Ai Hsing, Chong Sion Sien, Ho Vun Ken and Yeow Yee How.

Siti Nabila Binti Ahmat Jailani, Wong Yee Jing and Chai Siew Ching scored 9As while Ahmad Yusuf Bin Samsudin and Voon Shen Jin obtained 8As.

The five top scorers said they studied individually at home for about half an hour to one hour daily at night rather than in groups. They also spent some time on revision.

They were thankful to their teachers and tuition teachers for teaching them with patient as well as their parents for their full support. Some of their mothers prepared good daily meals for them.

Nur Shuhada, who wishes to pursue a Food Technology course overseas, was satisfied with her result although she was a bit disappointed for not scoring A+ in three subjects.

Admitting that she faced difficulty remembering some of the steps in Additional Mathematics subject in her studies, she advised students sitting for their SPM this year to pay full attention in the class.

Another student, Fong was happy and satisfied with her results and admitted that Sejarah (History) was the most difficult subject for her, as it involved memorising the facts.

Hence, she urged SPM students for this year to fully concentrate in class.

Fong hopes to pursue a Medical Science degree course at a university.

Chong, who aspires to be an engineer, also advised SPM students to plan their time properly for studying.

He agreed with Fong that Sejarah demands hard work although it is a boring subject.

Ho, who wishes to pursue a foundation course in medicine, could feel the pressure in scoring good results in SPM but paying full concentration is very important for students sitting for their SPM.

Yeow, who will continue to Form Six, advised every student to work hard and get themselves ready long before the examination.

Wong, who wishes to become an engineer, faced some difficulties in memorizing facts in Sejarah and Biology subjects.

She said revision is very important to score better results.

“I always concentrate in class and forget about entertainment. We should feel relax in our studies all the time. I wish to study for my STPM and become a successful accountant,” Chai added.
